Two towhees are building a nest in the clematis vine again. Last year a pair of California towhees made their nest in this same spot, and lost their eggs to a marauding raccoon. I heard the cries in the night, a scuffle, and then silence. The next morning the nest was gone, tumbled from the vine's protecting tendrils, and the towhees were gone, too. If I was fluent in towhee I would post a sign: Danger: Do Not Nest Here. But there is nothing I can do. I did not make any new year's resolutions this year, but next year, first on the list will be: I will try to worry less about birds.
