There's a homeless old man who plays violin in the Civic Center BART station. He has a tattered bow and a decrepit violin with only one string, and he saws away on it creating a piercing racket. Today I was happy to see that he had a brand-new violin; a gift, perhaps, from some kindly benefactor. A small crowd had gathered, eager to hear the homeless man play his beautiful new instrument for the first time. But the instant his new bow touched the strings people clapped their hands to their ears. All he knew how to do was saw up and down on a single string, just like with the old violin, making a screech that echoed horribly throughout the cavernous station.
