I think you are pretty good at that already. As one of the serious ones, I have mixed feelings. Research has shown that pessimists are better predictors of the future than optimists. Of course, some of the dire futures could be self-fulfilling prophesies.
The good side of being a pessimist... Pessimists are much less likely to be disappointed than optimists!
BUT... I like the New Year resolution anyway!
As a lifelong optimist, I have rarely been disappointed.

Actually, I'm a pesoptimist. We'll all muddle through somehow, but it's best to keep your expectations low.
